Seven alleged members of Germany's far-left group stand trial over multiple violent incidents

Seven individuals accused of being the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, accused for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the nickname “the hammer group”.

International terror listing and legal charges

Earlier this month, the United States classified the organization as a terrorist organization along with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany claim the group was responsible for attacks on sites in Germany and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some severely injured.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honor” that attracts far-right participants from throughout the continent.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted assault against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the identical event in 2023.

Historical background and organizational structure

The former East Germany has long been a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, tasked with planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by Paul M, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, irritant sprays, concealment items and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

Another militant formerly involved with the group, Lina E, emerged as a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation renders organization affiliates barred from entering the US, freezes any assets they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing AfD party applauded the American move and urged the government in Berlin to take similar action. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The danger from the organization has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or remain detained.”
